FAQ

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Who can practice Yoga?

Anyone can practice Yoga, no matter their age, condition or religion. Young or old, sick or fit - all can benefit from this discipline. After all, everyone has to breathe, whatever their walk of life. You do not need special equipment or clothes - just a small amount of space and a strong desire for a healthier, more fulfilled life. Asanas exercises every part of your body, stretching and toning the muscles and joints, the spine and the entire skeletal system. And they work not only on your body’s frame but on the internal organs, glands and nerves as well, keeping all systems in radiant health. Releasing physical and mental tension liberates vast resources of energy. Pranayamas expand the breath, increase energy, revitalize the body, and control the mind, giving you a calm freshness. Positive thinking and meditation gives you increased clarity, mental power, and concentration. Samadhis are climaxes into spiritual consciousness and Self-realization.

Is this a studio?

“Yes” you can visit, study, and practice with Sri Sudarshan at his Miami Beach Ashram. “No” these are not gymnastics classes. We are a school for higher spiritual education, providers of biomedical healthcare services, and professional trainers for multinational organizations, social leaders, and humanitarian pioneers. We are everywhere you are; SKYLIGHT YOGA is without limits! The sky cannot be limited. The light reveals it.

How old is Yoga?

Yoga does not have an age when understood in its true and profound sense. Yoga shows the way of, and is verily your own innermost nature—the universal soul—so it does not have a beginning nor does it have an end. Yoga is not something that was born or created, therefore it does not die or cease to exist. The universal law of gravity did not start with a person. In the same way, the divine, mystic, and universal laws of Yoga were not created by the human mind. The finite mind is not able to create universal, spiritual laws. If every single person on Earth forgot about gravity, gravity would still exist—because it was not created from the finite mind, and it is part of the universal existence. You, too, are part of this universal existence; and Yoga is the method of uniting with it.

Is there a religion?

It is incorrect to identify Yoga with any religion or a dogma. Yoga is not a religion since it is eternal in its nature, nonsectarian in its principles, and universal in its application. Nor is it a dogma, since it is a scientific process of inner evolution bringing about the expansion of consciousness. Yoga is the path leading from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to light, and from death to immortality. Therefore it is for truth seekers of all religions. Yoga is a boon for humanity. And it is India’s greatest gift to the world. That is why Yoga has made a profound impact on people globally, irrespective of their nationality, race, or religion. You can learn to meditate on a candle, flower, the Star of David, or the Cross, as well as on Krishna or Rama, or any object of focus. Remember this: the object of concentration can be different but the technique remains the same.

Can I heal my pain?

“Yes.” - The first Yogis sought to answer fundamental questions such as Who Am I? What Is My Purpose? What Is My Goal? And How Can I Remove All Pain? They discovered that through Yoga you can control physical pain; and the emotional and spiritual pain by meditation and by coming to a real understanding of who you truly are. Free from all false identification with name, form, and activity, you transcend the body and world altogether and find your one real Self which is transcendent, immortal and all-pervading. So you see—though Yoga begins with the body—it ends by transcending it.

Who should I learn from?

The short answer is someone who is knowledgeable and unselfish. Learn spirituality from a person endowed with straightforwardness and truthfulness. Seek those rare souls with utmost generosity, integrity, purity, responsibility, sincerity, and humility. Yoga is a living science - one that has both remained unchanged in its essence as well as having evolved over thousands of years in accordance with the needs of humanity. One of the most important figures in the path of Yoga and the ascension of the spiritual aspirant is the Guru. Even the mere presence of your Guru is elevating, inspiring, and soul-stirring. His very name itself is illuminating. Living in your Guru’s company is spiritual education. That which is spoken encompasses all gospels of truth. A true Yogi practices what they teach, and teaches what they practice. Guru is your guide or spiritual preceptor - your dearest relative and most intimate friend. Guru is an embodiment of wisdom, sweetness, mercy, and love. Guru represents your Higher Self. Guru is that device which illuminates the cave of your heart. A true Yoga Guru is a blessing to the suffering humanity. Enlightened Gurus know the spiritual path. They know the pitfalls and snares on the way. Guru gives you warnings, and removes obstacles on your path. Yoga teachers are there to inspire and impart spiritual strength to the students. Guru removes darkness by being a living center of spiritual illumination. Learn true Yoga by discipleship, by investigation, and by service. The wise, who see the essence of things, will instruct you in wisdom.

Am I considered a disciple?

Just as mere study of books cannot make one a Guru, mere words cannot make one a disciple. One who has direct Knowledge of the Self can only be considered a Guru. If you can find peace in the presence of a great soul or Guru, and if your doubts are removed by their very presence, then you can take them as your Guru. A realized Guru looks for somebody who is truly committed, who holds truth above life, and transmits divine consciousness and knowledge of Yoga. This person looks for another like that and transmits it to them. This chain continued for thousands of years without a single break. This is known as the Guru-Shishya relationship, or Guru Parampara. Parampara is literally “an uninterrupted tradition” – it means an unbroken lineage of imparted knowledge. When there was a need to convey subtle and powerful knowledge, it was always done in an atmosphere of utter trust between the master and disciple. Spiritual aspects of life were never written down because once you write it, all kinds of people will read it and misinterpret it. Only a devotee, disciple, or student who was at a certain level of evolution (qualification, purification, discipline, and faith) was directly given the secret instructions of Yoga by a Yoga Master; others who were unable to utilize it properly were not. That is how it was transmitted for thousands upon thousands of years. So the better question to ask is—do I even have the qualities of a genuine disciple?

Why is a Guru necessary?

If you want to reach the very peak of your consciousness, of yourself - you need a lot of energy - all the energy you have and more. When the crisis moment comes in a disciple’s or Yogi’s or spiritual aspirant’s growth, he needs a little push on the energetic and spiritual level. Without that push, he doesn’t have the necessary energy to reach the peak. Only someone who has reached that ultimate peak can pull you up there. Nobody else. Therefore follow closely with keen enthusiasm the words and teachings of your Guru and ascend to the summit!

How do I approach a Guru?

The spiritual aspirant should have an eager and receptive attitude to imbibe the teachings of the Master. Then only will the aspirant be benefited spiritually; otherwise, there is not the least hope of the spiritual life. It is not like the relationship of a student to their teacher or professor in schools and colleges. The spiritual relationship with a Guru is entirely different. It involves perfect devotion. It is very sacred. It is purely divine. Approach your Guru with profound humility, sincerity, and complete and utter devotion.

How long until I’m enlightened?

To understand what Yoga is all about you need to experience it. At first glance it seems to be little more than a series of strange physical postures and breathing techniques to keep the body healthy, lean and flexible. But in time, anyone who continues with regular practice under the guidance of a Knowledgeable and Unselfish teacher becomes aware of a subtle change in their approach to life - for, through persistent sadhana, you begin to glimpse a state of inner peace which is your true nature. It is this that constitutes the essence of Yoga - this Self-Realization that we are all seeking, consciously or unconsciously, and towards which we are all gradually evolving. You are already in the battle, already on the path, so you have no other choice but to equip and qualify yourself for it. If you can bring your mind and thoughts under control, there is literally no limit to what you can do - since it is only your own illusions and preconceptions that hold you back and prevent you from fulfilling the purpose of your life: enlightenment.
